PacSoft has various High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions to address your business needs. Many of our customers prefer to have the added stability and segregation of running a separate backup appliance while others are content using a software solution or data replication.

Every organization is vulnerable to unforeseen disasters. Whether the business is struck by theft, vandalism, hardware failure, fire hurricane, flooding or similar hazard, the aftermath could easily cripple business operations. A DR plan allows you to continue critical business operations and keep your company running with little or no downtime. There's no need to gamble with critical business data. Data Backup

A backup is a replication of the data and programs stored on your computer system, ideally storing the replicated information off-site to ensure the information can be retrieved and restored should the system be impacted. System Administrators will often schedule a mix of full and incremental backups so any loss of data can be quickly and easily restored from these files. Full backups incorporate the duplication of the complete hard drive while incremental backups simply incorporate the replication of files that changed since the last backup was completed.

Disaster Recovery

While many companies believe that data backups will protect them from potential disasters, completing these backups will not do your organization much good unless there is a Disaster Recovery (DR) Plan in place. The DR plan should be documented and a hard copy kept somewhere that all IT staff can access. While a DR plan may seem unnecessary, in an emergency situation, who knows what your staff's states of mind may be. A written document will walk them, step by step, through what systems need to come back online and in what order.

High Availability and Redundancy

Storage devices are used in your environment to copy and protect data by creating backups. Backups alone will not keep your system up and running should a hardware failure occur. A High Availability (HA) solution will however, provide the uninterrupted service required in today's business world.

Each HA solution may include identical pairs of servers, firewalls, switches, routers and other equipment. If one of the members of a hardware pair fails, the backup unit will automatically take over and service continues uninterrupted. This process is known as failover. Without built-in failover, a HA system would require human intervention, risking possible system failure and loss of data. An HA infrastructure is a must for companies that cannot afford to have their computing hardware down. A PacSoft Systems Engineer can determine which HA solution will best suit your company, then configure and implement the HA solution so that mission critical hardware is always on and your data is protected.

DR Testing

It is important to perform DR tests on your system occasionally. This should include testing your backup system as well, even if the backup server indicates that backups have been completed successfully. Performing these tests will ensure the backup system is functioning properly should disaster strike.

A DR test allows an organization to work through a planned step-by-step Disaster and Recovery scenario. This kind of test can reveal areas of weakness, such as missed steps or additional staff training necessary, in order to remain operational when something like a flood or fire occurs.
